identity

Discrimination has become a very prominent issue across the nation. Violence has poisoned our communities and cities. Through my garments I wanted to show the struggles we have all faced in the past and present and how we can move forward to the future with unity and embracement.
My project was derived from my previous portfolio projects on Stop Asian Hate. I have expanded my inspiration and outreach to Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment because every individual has experienced both discrimination and harassment at some point in the past.
For the three deliveries I did for my portfolio last semester, they were dedicated to the past, present, and our future. The future delivery focuses on what I want for the community which is the enlightenment
of embracement and unity. My thesis
project expands on that.

The shape of the circular outer piece symbolizes that unity and the manipulated hands
on the surface depicts that embracement. My two looks are reflections of one another.
The first look is in black and white, representing the past. The second look is in neutrals
and skin tones representing our diverse skins. The hands are intertwined, showing the embracement aspect. I have my friends' hands printed onto fabric and then embroidered onto
the circular garment.
I implemented a QR code to my pieces which will lead to a documentary of our stories
on the topic of harassment and discrimination. I wanted to fuse fashion, film, and technology together in this project. The two looks bring the past, the present, and the future together
as a cycle rather than a spectrum.

This disease has plagued our nation for too long. It is time for us to stand up and speak out against it. It is time for us to see a brighter future. As a creative, it is important for me to bring that darkness into the light and share a voice. I asked
some of my friends to share their experiences on this topic, here are their voices...
Designer & Creative Direction: Nancy Yuan
Cinematography: Jack Eddings & Paul McGreevy
Editing: Olivia Perez Fung & Teddi McCabe
Storytellers: Jazmin Ayala, Chelsea Pinchera, Amiya Smalls, Brittany Hoang, & Nancy Yuan

Through my recent projects, I found myself and my purpose as a designer. My passion is to design with a voice. It is important for me to bring darkness into the light and speak up about topics I am passionate about through art. It is important to touch on sensitive topics and start a conversation because that is an outlet for some of us and it is also a way to educate one another.
